Issues.

At its best, education opens doors and unlocks potential. Yet in a city of abundant resources, we face persistent inequity- our opportunity gap and outcomes for special ed students rank among the worst in the nation. A system that is responsive to the needs of kids is, by definition, an equitable system. In order to effectively address disparities in our schools, we must align our district to focus on student outcomes, such that every child in this city receives the education they deserve. Our kids are facing an unprecedented mental health crisis. Our schools are facing a budget crisis. And data show that too many students in our district are profoundly underserved. Addressing these issues requires big picture thinking and a systems approach to enacting meaningful change. Here are some of my top priorities:

1. Children nationwide are experiencing an unprecedented mental health crisis. We must increase the number of trained mental health professionals in buildings, promote mental health awareness and destigmatization, and use our schools as hubs to connect students and their families to wrap around services. This will require strengthening existing partnerships with the city, county and local organizations, as well as initiating new ones. We must treat our students as whole people, and recognize that their mental health is key to their ability to learn and thrive. Children who grow up with unaddressed mental health needs become adults living with unaddressed mental health needs.

2. Fiscal accountability is crucial for the efficient and effective use of resources in our school system. The budget crisis our district faces carries serious ramifications, but it's also an opportunity to refocus our priorities. As a school board member, I am committed to ensuring transparency and responsible financial management. Additionally, I will work to increase community engagement in the budgeting process, seeking input from parents, educators, and community members to ensure that our financial decisions align with the needs and priorities of our diverse community.

3. Any effective movement is built on relationships, and education is a collective effort that requires the active involvement of parents, families, and community partnerships. Community engagement and clear communication are vital for building strong relationships between schools, families, and the broader community, which is why I will advocate for inclusive engagement policies and proactive, transparent communication. Of equal importance is a solid understanding of the job of the school board within the overall structure of the school district. Systems function effectively when everyone understands their role.
